Choice concerts: Speak your mind…

After taking a break last week, I’m back with a show that’s a little different than ones I’ve written about before:

Henry Rollins, Revolution Live, Sept. 27-28

If your choice in music leans toward the aggressive, chances are you may have run across Henry Rollins a time or two.

During the ’80s he was the lead singer of one of the truly great punk bands, Black Flag. Into the ’90s he built himself a solid solo career with songs such as “Liar” and “Low S.O.”

But those who only know him as a well-pumped, tattooed punk singer are missing a lot of the point of Rollins. He’s an author, letter writer, radio host, TV host and has become — in a very roundabout way — one of the true artists of stand-up comedy.

OK, when he does it it’s supposed to be called “spoken word”.

But whatever. Henry gets up on stage, just him and a microphone, he tells you what’s on his mind and nine times out of 10, I’m rolling in the aisle. (I mean, his material’s funny enough to get on XM’s comedy channel. That’s saying something… )

His material tends to head toward the political — which is nothing new, as he tended toward the political every so often as a musician and author. And his tour, which will hit Fort Lauderdale’s Revolution Live, is called the Recountdown Tour 2008.

Gee… you think he’ll talk about Palm Beach County? You know… with all the problems? I mean, it’s not like he’d lack for material by focusing on PBC, right?

Also this week: Nelly is back with his first album in four years and hits the clubs to promote it — he’ll be at Revolution on Thursday… If your idea of funny rolls its own — Cheech and Chong are at the Fillmore on Saturday … Delray’s City Limits features three bands on Friday — B-Liminal, Spred The Dub and the People Upstairs.
