Journey’s Escape video game proof you are in my age group

On this week’s somewhat disorganized but often entertaining Deadcast — that’s Deadspin‘s podcast, hosted by “Big Daddy Drew” Magary — the topic of video games came up and while the trio of Magary, AJ Daulerio and Will Leitch had placed themselves behind me on the age chart with some of their mentions, when the game “Journey: Escape” came up, I shouted “You are in my age group now, boys!”

From what I remember, “Journey: Escape” — as I’m sure you’ve guessed by now — involved the corporate rock band Journey. Apparently, the goal was to save each member of Journey from some horrible fate — opening for Styx? — and get them to a live show.

If you succeeded in this goal, you’d get to hear a song — probably “Separate Ways” — played by the bemulleted quintet.

While Pac-Man and Galaga seemed to make it out of the 1980s intact, “Journey: Escape” was not as fortunate. Which is a shame, especially when there was a video-game game show on TBS that celebrated the rockin’ game’s debut in arcades.

(If someone knows the game show I’m referring to, please help!)

Trends: Clara, the depression and pasta with peas

Every so often, I like to look at Google Trends to see what’s the hottest search available. Many times it isn’t surprising, sometimes, however it’s totally fascinating.

Today for example, a lot of people are looking up Clara Cannucciari, a 93-year-old grandmother.

Why?

Because she has a YouTube show called “Depression Cooking with Clara”:

Not only are they sensible meals, they come with a message that’s really important right now: You have to make do with what you have.

(A suggestion: her site‘s a little on the slow side, so unless you have a lot of patience, just go to YouTube and look her up.)

The media: Can newspapers save themselves?

I’ve said it as long as I’ve been on this side of the fence: News isn’t going anywhere. It’s the method of delivery that’s changing.

The New York Observer’s article hits on that, but puts newspapers to the task — if they want to remain viable, they have to move fast. IPhone apps, ad behavioral tracking, maybe even collaboration with technology.

Justice’s DVNO video… for the typography lover in all of us…

Courtesy of rgb255‘s site, here’s a video homage to all of those great logos and typography of the last 30 years:

UPDATED: Warner Music pulled all their videos from YouTube, so that’s gone. Jerks.

UPDATED AGAIN: Yay, Daily Motion!

It’s the most wonderful time…

The weather turns cold, the calendar turns to December and there’s joy in my heart.

Rex Sorgatz’s list of lists has begun again.

For me — a list geek for as long as I can remember — Sorgatz’s Fimoculous site, which is always quite good, becomes a completely indispensable place during the final months of a year, and January in the year begun anew.

(And I’m a little biased — a couple of years ago, I emailed him my paper’s year-end lists, including my own. And he published them! Felt like a celebrity that day…)

The Fimoculous Web site’s list is amazing in its scope — anything people can aggregate into a best-of (or worst-of) list can be found here. Best music/movies/TV to be sure, but also the Word of the Year, according to the American Oxford Dictionary (it’s “hypermiling”… which is to exceed expected MPG estimates with your car); the 10 worst companies according to Multinational Monitor (varying from the expected — like AIG — to the downright scary — apparently Cargill’s messing with the world food supply), and Lifehacker’s best top 10 lists, which is truly the most meta a list can become.

All of the classics

Missed out on an internet meme and feel left out because of it? Or do you just miss that time you forwarded the dancing baby to everyone you know?

Well, someone did a great timeline

Personally, I miss this one.
